Standards

The play Standards stages 8 hip-hop dancers shaping together a population. They take possession of a public symbol of society life, the flag or more exactly the banner. In a literal and geometrical way, the dancers study the proportions and the space of the symbol with all their energy and grace. They widen and bend the limits of these imaginary territories in which the poetical absorbes the political. The hip-hop dance which is structured by models and codes becomes the playful and dynamic tool of the study. It brings forward the subtleness, the complexity, and even the impossibility of establishing definitions. Is the flag a fallback onto one’s self ? In the literal as in the figurative way, the play Standards lays on the stage this evolutionary and sometime elusive question. And in this way, it searches the individual in the universal and the universal in the individual … Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.

The 30 minute version was presented on the 2nd February 2012 at the festival Suresnes cités danse festival with Lydie Alberto, Abdulaye Barry, Mathieu Hernandez, Gionvanni Leocadie, Sandrine Lescourant, Yoann Nirennold, Camille Regneault, Julien Saint-Maximin, Marie-Kaae Schmidt.
